John E. Seagraves

07/05/1926 - 03/31/2024

Celebration of Life Services for Mr. John Edward Seagraves, will be held Monday, April 15, 2024, 1:00 P.M. at Israel Missionary Baptist Church, 2071 Hosea L. Williams Dr., Atlanta, GA., with remains placed in repose at 12:00 NOON.

John’s legacy is one of immense generosity. The many charities he supported ranged from veterans’ affairs and children’s hospitals to world hunger and homelessness, in addition to donations of Thanksgiving dinners to the Forest Park Police and Fire Departments. John was rich in family and friends. There was not a family member, friend, or even stranger in need that John was not willing to support. With his passing on the sacred evening of Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024, John joins wife Mildred and returns to his father in heaven.

After returning home to Georgia in 1980, John continued his award-winning food service with several restaurants and catering services, including Southern Vittles at The Underground and (the longest running of all) John’s Fine Food I & II. His holiday catering is a legendary staple with customers lined out the door for hours for his celebrated soul food dishes. Additionally, he held catering and held contracts at City Hall and the Atl. Civic Center for eight years. In those capacities, John fed countless people in the community (e.g., Mayors Maynard Jackson, Andy Young, Congressman John Lewis), legendary performers (e.g., Frank Sinatra, Bill Cosby, Sammy Davis Jr.), prestigious organizations (e.g., NYC Metropolitan Opera), and finally well-known corporations (e.g., Coca Cola, Delta Airlines).

John is survived by his daughters Patricia and Linda, his son David, and his granddaughters Mackenzie, Chanyce, and Marissa. John was equally blessed with a multitude of loving nieces and nephews, cherished friends including Cynthia Dabney, and loyal employees that have served his food enterprises for decades. Chief among these is Alversia Sanders who stood by him faithfully for over 45 years. In his final weeks, John spoke of the beauty of the stars. He now joins them “... And he will make the face of heaven so fine.”
