Robert Edward Blumenthal, age 92, of Annandale, Virginia passed away on April 8, 2024. Bob was born on November 1, 1931 to Gertrude Elizabeth Blumenthal, née Wood, and Edward Lewis Blumenthal in Portland, Maine. After graduating from Portland High School in 1950, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Serving for 30 years, he rose to the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant. He loved his career (Oohra) and earned multiple awards, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with “1960” Device, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and multiple Good Conduct awards.
After retiring from the Marine Corps, he served as a civilian with the Defense Security Service at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
In 1952, Bob met and subsequently married Arline Mae Dorow of Petersham, Massachusetts. They went on to have four children, Coleen, Robert, Jr., Gary, and Karen.
Bob was an avid Boston Red Sox fan, bowled, played golf, and generally enjoyed life. He loved using language to entertain with quips, limericks, wit, and many, many dad jokes.
He is survived by his children, Coleen Ann Blumenthal of Falls Church, VA; Gary Robert Blumenthal (Jeanie) of Emerald Isle, NC; Karen Elizabeth Smith (Tony) of New York, NY; three grandchildren: Megan Henderson (Justin) of Aberdeen, NC; Jack Blumenthal (Elizabeth) of Ashburn, VA; and Benjamin Blumenthal (Catie) of Danville, PA; plus three great-grandsons, Grant and Mace Blumenthal, and Alexander Henderson.
Bob was predeceased by his father, Edward Lewis Blumenthal of Portland, Maine; his mother, Gertrude Elizabeth Blumenthal of South Berwick, Maine; his brother, Donald Blumenthal of Portland, Maine; his wife, Arline Mae Blumenthal; and his son, Robert Edward Blumenthal, Jr.
Burial services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, donations are welcomed at the Alzheimer’s Association.
