Obituary For Willie Edwards, Sr.

Willie Preston Edwards, Sr., 73, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 in The Bronx, NY. Mr. Edwards was born on October 11, 1942 to the late Sylvester and Maggie Edwards. In his youth, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and joined Mt. Moriah Baptist Church of Spartanburg, SC. Later in life, he became an affiliated member of the Melina Presbyterian Church of Gable, SC. Willie received his education in the public schools of Spartanburg, SC and moved to New York as a young adult. He received training as an operating room technician and worked for many years at Beth Israel Hospital and Doctors Hospital, both in Manhattan, NY. Willie obtained additional education when he began his second career as Assistant Director of Girls Town, a group home in Manhattan, NY. A lover of music, he could often be heard providing an ad lib bass line to his favorite tunes. Left to cherish fond and loving memories are: his son, Willie P. Edwards, Jr. of Norfolk, VA; his daughters, Tracey (Germain) Thompson of Antioch, TN and Erika (Kevin) Perry of Solon, OH; his sisters, Allean Moore of Duncan, SC and Carrie (Carnell) Hampton of Sumter, SC; his brother, Jimmy (Rose) Edwards of The Bronx, NY; his maternal aunt, Rosa Mayes of Spartanburg, SC; his six grandchildren, Anthony Phoenix, Jr., Maurice Wimbush, Tayler Waters-Perry, Kevin Perry, Jada Edwards and Willie P. Edwards, III; his three great-grandchildren, Nia Phoenix, Alana Phoenix and Tyler Maurice Wimbush; his dear cousin, Jessie Smith; his special friend, Dorothy Woodberry; and a host of relatives and friends. A Celebration of the Life of Willie Preston Edwards, Sr. will be held on Friday, January 8, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at The John Stinson Woodward Memorial Chapel, 602 Howard St., Spartanburg, SC. Reverend Carnell Hampton will officiate. Interment will be in the Lincoln Memorial Gardens, 2310 Cannons Campground Rd., Drayton, SC. The Edwards family will receive friends at 152 Princeton St., Spartanburg, SC.
