Obituary For Mrs. Mary Dye Swygert

SPARTANBURG, SC-- Mrs. Mary Alice Dye Swygert was born on November 1st, 1924 and entered rest on February 22, 2016. A native of Hickory Grove, South Carolina, she attended public school in York County. She was the widow of Mr. John Swygert Jr. and the daughter of the late Mr. Bill Dye and Mrs. Alma Anderson Dye. Mrs. Swygert joined St. James A.M.E.Z Church in Hickory Grove, South Carolina at an early age. She moved to Gastonia, North Carolina for a short time and later relocated to Greensboro, North Carolina in the Mid 1950s.She joined Union Memorial United Methodist Church in the early 1950s where she served as an Usher and member of the Birthday Club. Mrs. Swygert retired from the Cheeks and Hall Families after over 30 years of service, helping rear their children. She moved to Spartanburg in 2008 and later joined Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in 2009. While a resident at White Oak, she participated in various activities such as making jewelry, art, and singing on the chorus. She also took part in helping to raise funds for breast cancer research. Mrs. Swygert became so active during her time at White Oak that she received several awards for her enthusiastic participation. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Elizabeth Gill; a brother Otis Dye; two sisters, Bertha Anderson and Ethel Parham. Left to cherish precious memories are: her grandson, Wayne Gill; her devoted sisters, Frances Dye and Phenie D. (Moses) Golatt; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A Celebration of the Life of Mary Alice Dye Swygert will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. Dr. Reverend Benjamin D. Snoddy will officiate. Interment will be in the Lincoln Memorial Gardens, 2310 Cannons Campground Rd., Drayton, SC.
