Joseph “JoJo” Barnes, of Richmond, died April 25, 2024 at the age of 74. He was born to the late Jean Freeman Barnes and Joseph T. Barnes, Sr. on March 24th, 1950. At an early age, he was baptized at Mount Carmel Baptist Church. After graduating from John Marshall High School in 1968, he went on to received his Bachelor Degree in Political Science from Virginia Union University. He worked for the Department of Social Services in Richmond, Virginia for a few decades until illness forced him to take disability leave.
He endured his illness like a a soldier. he would continue to march on in his life contributing to his community by participating in the Crusade of Voters and the NAACP. He was a very proud member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Jo Jo continued to be a strong advocate and supporter of his beloved Virginia Union university.
He is survived by his brother, Kelvin Freeman Barnes; several relatives and many devoted friends.
An Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Omega service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 8 at Scott's Chapel, 116 E. Brookland Park Blvd. followed by Memorial services. Rev. Samuel Barnes, II, officiating. Dr. Jerome Ross, eulogist.
