Obituary For Willie Layton

Spartanburg, SC - Willie James “Big Joe” Layton, 72, of 277 Oakland Ave., passed on December 10, 2016. Mr. Layton was the son of the late Willie and Helton Layton. He was the husband of Gwendolyn Wilson Layton; a Spartanburg County native. Willie retired from Tietex, where he also served as the Tietex basketball coach. Survivors include: his wife, Gwendolyn Wilson Layton; his daughters, Darlene Layton and Tammy Layton Jeter both of Spartanburg, SC; his son, Rodney Layton of the home; his five sisters, Barbara Wiggins (James), Eunice Parker and Sharon Layton all of Spartanburg, SC, Sarah Crosby of Greensboro, NC and Mary Wright (Willie) of Frederick, MD; his three brothers, Anthony Layton and Dennis Layton both of Spartanburg, SC and Johnny Layton (Carol) of Greensboro, NC; his sister-in-law, Jeanette Layton of Spartanburg, SC; and a host of relatives and friends. A Celebration of the Life of Willie James “Big Joe” Layton will be held on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, 502 S. Daniel Morgan Ave., Spartanburg, SC. Reverend Jefferey King and Dr. M. Keith McDaniel, Sr. will officiate. Interment will be in the Lincoln Memorial Gardens, 2310 Cannons Campground Rd., Drayton, SC. The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Darlene Layton, 337 E. Myles Ln., Spartanburg, SC 29303.
