Shirley P. Doggett was born to the parentage of Mr. John Walter & Mrs. Christine Worthy Brown. In 1969, she married James M. Doggett. She demonstrated academic excellence within the Barnesville school district, graduating at the top of her class in 1958. Continuing her education, she pursued a Bachelor's Degree in English at Clark Atlanta University." Professionally, Shirley began her career as an English teacher at Booker High School, subsequently transitioning into a managerial position at Southern Bell. She than served in various capacities, notably as a human resource specialist for the US Army Tank Automotive Command across multiple locations including Fort McPherson, Fort Bragg, Fort Benning, Force Com and San Juan, as well as with the CDC as a personnel specialist contractor. Shirley exemplified a deep appreciation for education, considering it not just a pursuit but a passion. As an avid reader, she continually sought to expand her knowledge, immersing herself in the world of literature and learning. In her community, Shirley took on multiple leadership roles, showcasing her dedication to service and empowerment. She co-founded the Barnesville High and Industrial/Booker Schools Alumni Association, demonstrating her commitment to preserving educational legacies. Additionally, she was a proud member of Virtuous 10, advocating tirelessly for the youth education initiatives. Shirley's 63-year membership with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. underscored her lifelong dedication to community engagement and social progress. Fearlessly embracing the ethos of “good trouble” she actively participated in initiatives aimed at improving the lives of those around her, leaving an indelible mark on her community. Shirley's life embodied the spirit of the redbird, a symbol of hope, joy, vitality, faith and love. Her legacy as a teacher, leader, and inspirational figure touched our hearts profoundly. She encouraged us to strive for our personal best and pursue our aspirations with purpose. In her transition, Shirley remains akin to the red bird, an angelic presence always near, reminding us to “be alert”. To honor her memory, she is survived by her husband James and her cherished GEMS: Dr. Chrishirella F. Sutton, Molena Wells (Jerome), Anika Madden (Javon), James II; along with her grandchildren: Jerome (Jayhida), Jalen, Tyler, Janaia, King, James III, John, and Hope. She is also survived by her siblings: Johnnie Robinson, Walter K. Brown (Phyllis), Puddin Caldwell (Calvin), Travis Brown (Dawn), and a multitude of nieces and nephews and also relatives and friends.
