On the morning of Monday, May 6, 2024, Joe Louis Thompson Sr., age 66, gained his wings and joined his heavenly family. He passed away at Pruitt-Health-North Augusta, SC surrounded by family and friends. Joe was born in Camden, South Carolina on January 18, 1958, to the late Bennie and Christine Thompson.

Joe enlisted in the US Army Reserve in July of 1976, and completed his 16 years of Honorable Service in March of 1993. During his time of duty, Joe served several tours of duty overseas during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and received medals and honors for his Leadership and Excellence. After his military career, Joe was employed by Swift Transportation(1993-94) as a Truck Driver/Trainer, Fluor Daniels/Monsanto(1994-97) as an Utilities worker/Receiving and Storeroom clerk, and Austin Industrial/Solutia/Prayon(1997-2023) as a Mechanic Assistant/Chemical Operator where he retired. Joe was an active sports referee throughout his military and civilian career, and helped to establish the CSRA Officials Referee Association and was a respected and honored member since 1984. Joe’s love for GOD was also an important part of his life. He served as Head Deacon/Bookkeeper of “New Beginning Believers Living Ministry, and established many traditions and celebrations that are continued in his honor at the church.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, James C. Thompson (Gladys D.), Willie Thompson, Eugene L. Thompson, Larry D. Thompson, and Fletcher “Zan” Thompson (Brenda).

His memories will be cherished by his wife, Beverly A. Thompson; son, Joe L. Thompson Jr. (Danielle); daughter, Ebony C. Thompson; grandchildren, Ciarra A. Thompson, Anthony L. Thompson, and Akhil R. Thompson; brothers, George Thompson (Osie); sister; Barbara Ann Gilmore; and a host of beloved nephews, nieces, and cousins.
