Vera Belle Lawson was born February 19, 1923 to Ed and Maude (Griffin) Winters in New Liberty, Clay County, Texas. She graduated Bellevue High School in 1940 and married her one true love Louis A. Lawson, Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1942.
When she and Louis decided to marry, they went to the Vashti Methodist Parsonage where the minister was in the front yard working on his car. They asked if they could get married. He said they would need a witness, so he went in the house and got his wife. The couple were married in the front yard of the parsonage.
After World War 2, the couple had four children, all girls. Vivian Jenyne, Janis Lynn, Belinda Lou, and Karen Darlene. They started their homestead in Vashti, Texas. As the family grew, they needed a bigger house. Louis built a house for the family in Bowie, Texas, where Vera Belle lived until she went home to live with Jesus.
Vera Belle spent countless hours serving and improving the life of others. She taught Sunday school and has volunteered at the Bowie Hospital, nursing homes, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and other organizations. God’s Table was perhaps the mission she loved most. You could find her most days washing dishes and giving food and smiles to anyone in need. She was a devoted member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Bowie, Texas, for 65 years and the Pleasant Mound Freewill Baptist (Rock Church) in Buffalo Springs, Texas.
