Obituary For Leonard Goodwin

Lenard Goodwin, 81, was unexpectedly called home on Wednesday, April 11, 2018. “Sonny”, as he was best known, was the son of the late Archie Goodwin and Beatrice Littlejohn Goodwin. He was the husband of Sara Hawkins Goodwin for fifty-seven years. Sonny graduated from Carver High School, Class of 1955. He spent many years pursuing his brick masonry career. During his fifty-eight years of working in the construction business, he mentored many young men who later used these skills to provide for their families. He was an avid golfer; he enjoyed playing with his golf buddy Charles Cole several times a week. He learned his golfing skills at the age of twelve serving as a caddy at the Spartanburg Country Club. Sonny joined Majority Baptist Church when he was very young and continued his membership until his death. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Lovell Goodwin Foster and Janie B. Goodwin Cooper. Sonny leaves to cherish loving memories to: his beloved wife, Sara; his daughter, Monica (Robert) Goodwin Hunter of Spartanburg, SC; his two sons, Leonard (Brenda) Hunter of Spartanburg, SC and David (Sheila) Goodwin of Worcester, MA; his six grandchildren; his niece; his four nephews; his devoted daughter-in-law, Sheila King Goodwin; and two special individuals he loved as his own children, Roger Brewton and Reginald Lann. Sonny always had a hand out or an encouraging word for those in need. Though his method of delivery was not always traditional he always kept it “REAL”. Graveside Services for Lenard “Sonny” Goodwin will be held on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. at Heritage Memorial Gardens, 3901 S. Church St., Roebuck, SC. Rev. Dr. Marcell D. Bush will officiate. In lieu of flowers donations should be made to: Majority Baptist Church Twelve Tribes Ministry, 400 Hudson Barksdale Blvd., Spartanburg, SC or Ruby Hawkins West Scholarship Fund c/o Spartanburg County Foundation, 424 E. My deepest sympathy in the loss of your dear loved one. May you be comforted by the words expressed at Isaiah 26:19 ; Your dead will live. And the earth will let those powerless in death come to life. Psalm 34:18 also provides comforting words. It says: Jehovah is close to the brokenhearted; He saves those who are crushed in spirit.
