Walter and Ruby Turner

Ruby Naomi Lylte Turner was called home on February 19, 2022, and Walter Emerson Turner followed on November 23, 2023. Married on August 13, 1955, they shared a remarkable 66 years together.


Ruby was the eldest of seven children, and is survived by her siblings: Williemae, Harold, Roberta, and Ronald. While Walter was the fourth of eight,and is survived by siblings Charles and Barbara.


Born in Spartanburg and Inman, South Carolina, respectively, Walter and Ruby were the anchors of their tight-knit Turner and Lytle families, bonds that endure to this day.


Throughout their marriage, Walter and Ruby were inseparable, doing everything together. They lovingly raised their three children in Columbus, Georgia, and Anchorage, Alaska.


Ruby, affectionately known as “Sug,” was a fearless, intelligent, and caring woman. Her smile could light up any room, and she approached every responsibility with seriousness and pride.


Walter's curious and humorous nature was contagious. A decorated veteran, he served two tours in Vietnam and one in Korea. His commendations include the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal with the 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Presidential Unit Citation (Army), followed by many other honorable awards.


The Turners' dedication to each other and their family was unwavering. Their legacy lives on through their children: Karine Turner Wheeler and spouse Tom Wheeler, Tony Ary-Turner and spouse Kim Ary-Turner, and Susan Turner. Their grandchildren: Ilia Wheeler, Inez Wheeler, Kamrica Ary-Turner and spouse Emilio Beaver, Walter Turner, and Tayon Ary-Turner. Their great-grandchildren: Zendaya Wheeler, Trevon Ary-Turner and spouse Kyra Ary-Turner, Paige Ary-Turner, and Tyson Ary-Turner.


Their absence leaves a profound void, but their memory is cherished by all who knew them. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for having had the privilege to love and be loved by them.

Homegoing Services will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. in the Upper Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, 1580 John Dodd Rd., Wellford, SC.
