Catherine Nixon was born October 18, 1938, to the late Harold and Rose Parrish. She was called home on August 4, 2024.
Catherine married Joseph Mitchell in her early twenties. To that union five children were born. After Joseph passed, she was left to raise her young children as a single parent, receiving much love and support from her family members and friends. She and her children met and bonded with the Simmons Family…a bond that has lasted to this day. Sometime later, she married Thomas Nixon.
Catherine was employed and retired from University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey where she lived for many years. She and Thomas eventually moved to North Augusta, South Carolina.
Catherine accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. Her relationship with God was immersed in her life as she raised her children. She served in and with, Joy Tabernacle COGIC, and New Ephesus Baptist Church while living in New Jersey. In South Carolina, she was a faithful member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia.
She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. A pastime favorite of hers was taking an annual cruise. She did so over eleven years. She had a love for the beach and called it “God's healing waters.” The sounds of her great-grandchildren brought laughter to her face and heart. Her grandchildren were the spark of joy in her life. She dressed “THEM” grand babies as if she had birthed them herself. That's because she loved to shop, as evidenced by how sharply she always dressed.
Catherine will be sorely missed by all who know and love her. She joins in eternity, her beloved husbands Joseph Mitchell and Thomas Nixon; her sons Derrick Mitchell and Joseph Lee; her parents, Harold and Rose Parrish; and her brother; Harold Parrish, Jr.
Catherine is survived by her sons Celvin (Cheyenne) Mitchell, Sr., Troy (Robbie) Mitchell, Sr., Dwayne (Melissa) Mitchell, and daughter Dorothy (Larry) Daves; loving grandchildren, Khadijah (Juan) Garcia-Garcia, Musheer Mitchell, Celvin (Carrie) Mitchell, Jr., Celvon (Avis) Mitchell, Cheyanna Mitchell, Nya Gray Mitchell, Terrance (Karina) Daves, Darshan Mitchell, Troy (Erica) Mitchell, Jr., Darlene Daves, Jessica Mitchell, Larell Daves, Derrick Mitchell, Jr., Joseph Mitchell and Larry Daves, Jr.; sister, Dorothy Bouie; brothers, Ronald Parrish, and Donald Parrish; sisters-in-law, Martha Richardson, JoAnn Parrish, Annie Nixon, and Virginia Nixon; brother-in-law, James Nixon; a special daugher, Landi Simmons Hooper; 20 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and longtime special and loving friends.
