Christopher Anthony Rutland Sr.

Christopher Anthony Rutland Sr., born on March 23, 1964, to the union of Jessie Rutland and Anne Shelton-Rutland, in Youngstown, Ohio, Christopher drew his last breath on August 6, 2024, after a valiant fight on the Youngstown campus of Mercy Health Hospital System.

A loving son, father, grandfather, and dedicated keeper of the peace, Christopher leaves behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.

The Cardinal Mooney alumnus enjoyed remarkable scholastic and athletic experiences opting to continue collegiately as well. Throughout his life, Christopher radiated compassion and warmth, earning him the reputation of a real-life superhero in the hearts of many.

His unwavering dedication to serving others, both as a Navy veteran and during his 19-year tenure with the Youngstown Police Department, exemplified his selfless and fearless nature. He believed in the exercise of law and order for a civilized society.

Christopher's commitment to safeguarding his community and mentoring the youth epitomized his noble character and sense of duty. His intentional investment of his professional and personal interests reflects his heartfelt duty to always, “protect & serve” humanity.

Prior to his service in law enforcement, Christopher proudly served in the United States Navy for 15 years. A true patriot, Chris dutifully fulfilled his tour of duties during the Gulf War, demonstrating his valor and commitment to his country. Following his military service, Christopher carried his sense of responsibility and leadership into the realm of law enforcement, where he served as a patrolman at the Youngstown Police Department.

Beyond his professional roles, Christopher's personal life was equally rich and meaningful. He found joy in coaching the Kearney Komets little league football team in San Diego, California, and instilled valuable lessons in countless young athletes. He shared openly with each participant, as he did his own sons his unshakeable moral compass instilling in young minds the values of integrity, self-worth, discipline and teamwork which he held dearly.

An avid master griller, card player, Cleveland Browns devotee and sports enthusiast, Christopher's lively spirit and love for life shone brightly in every activity he engaged in, from reading and dancing to engaging in spirited debates. His intellect and wit were unmatched, inspiring those around him to think critically and engage with the world in meaningful ways

Christopher will be dearly missed by his beloved mother Anne and his adoring sons Christopher Rutland Jr., Antwaine Rutland, Bryandon Sr. Rutland, and Dominique (Dayna) Rutland. He leaves cherished memories among his siblings, Cathy (Ronald) Davis, Diane Robinson, Carolyn Johnson, Sylvia Butler, Cleo (Thurman) Chisholm, Byron Rutland, and Jeffrey (Margarita) Rutland Sr.

His commitment will illuminate through the Rutland grandchildren, as legacy bearers, which include Antonio, Branijah, Branimir, Brielle, Danasia, Desean, Dominique, Jasani, Kylani, Marco, Talia and Bryandon Rutland Jr, as well as a score of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends honored to have been impacted by his fidelity and love.

After a well fought victory, Christopher now assumes his place perched among the ancestors. Upon entering Heaven’s gates, Chris was welcomed into eternity by wife & soul mate Elizabeth Torres Rutland, his doting daughter Evianna "Evi" Rutland, his venerated father Jesse Rutland and adoring sister Brenda Robinson.

A public viewing & family visitation will be held on Thursday August 15, 2024, from 9:30 am -11:00 am at the Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 646 Lakewood Ave., Youngstown, Ohio. To honor his memory, a Celebration of Life service begins at 11:00am with Pastor James Bowie officiating.

Following the services, the Youngstown Police Department will marshal the procession to Tod Homestead Cemetery where interment will take place, after Christopher is laid to rest with naval military honors befitting his noble service.

In Christopher's passing, we find solace in the beautiful memories he left behind and the profound impact he had on all who knew him. May his legacy of courage, kindness, and service continue to inspire us all.
