Our Heavenly Father breathed the breath of life into Mitchell Lewis McDowell on April 24, 1962, 62 years ago. Mitchell was the son of the late William “June” McDowell and the late Rev. Frances Lucille McDowell.
On Sunday, August 26, 2024, Mitchell transitioned from labor to reward surrounded by his wife, children, and siblings. His love, cooking, wisdom, and singing voice will never be forgotten.
He will be remembered for his willingness to serve where needed at Brooklyn C.M.E. Church where he was a Trustee, served as President of the All-Male Choir, and helped in the family life center’s kitchen.
His love for singing began as a teenager with the groups Love Masters and Zodiacs. He continued lifting his voice as a tenor with the Men of Faith, Gospel Determines, Fully Committed, and One Accord. Mitchell also enjoyed playing basketball, coaching softball, bowling, yard selling, and fishing.
Mitchell received his education in the Spartanburg County public school system and graduated from Spartanburg High School. After the completion of high school, he furthered his education by earning two certificates from Clemson University.
He retired after 30 years of service from Wofford College as Chef and Aramark as Production Manager. Additionally, he served as Chef for the Carolina Panthers during their spring training camp in Spartanburg, S.C.
On January 30, 1984, Mitchell married the love of his life of 40 years, Cynthia Marie McDowell (née Hurst), whom he began dating at the age of 14. This union was blessed with three children: Mr. Travis W. (Shikesta) McDowell, Mrs. Tanisha W. (Rell) Floyd,
and Ms. Terreyta W. (Anthony Gault) McDowell; seven grandchildren: Andrew McDowell, Tyzariyah Moore, Tyanna Carson, Nicolas Gault, Noah Gault, Nash Gault, and the late Tyquasia Young.
In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, he shared his life with his siblings Mr. Todd F. (Donna) McDowell, Mrs. Tina S. (Toby) Hamilton, and the late Bradford (Barbara) McDowell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, friends, and
“adopted” children.
Receiving of friends will be held in the J.W. Woodward Chapel on Friday, August 30, 2024 from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life for Mitchell Lewis McDowell will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Brooklyn C.M.E. Church,Chesnee, SC. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
