Mr. Joe L. Brown, a resident of Montgomery, AL., passed away August 30, 2024. A funeral service will be held Thursday, September 5, 2024 at 11:30 a.m. in Resurrection Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Alabama Heritage Cemetery.

Joe Lewis Brown was born in Lowndes County, Alabama to the late Rebecca Payne and Henry Brown. During his early years, he grew up in North Montgomery (Old Field) and attended St. James Baptist church and Montgomery County public schools. His high school years were spent at George Washington Carver High school where he excelled. His memory of poems and other sayings was exemplary. He attended Alabama State University until he was drafted into the U.S. Army. After his tour of duty ended, he attended Alabama Christian College.

Joe was a faithful member of Resurrection Catholic Church where he was a member of the choir and a participant in many activities. Attending mass was important to him as he worked various shifts at the Veterans Administration (V. A.) Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama. After 59 years of service, Joe retired as an Administrative Officer on Duty in March 2023. His V. A. colleagues were like family members, and he always spoke fondly of them.

Joe was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Baron K. Brown; sisters, Susan Hilson and Pearline Barnes; and brother, Louis Giles. Mourning his passing are his loving wife, Lois J. Brown; daughters, Janice Avery (Kenneth) and Teri Brown; brother, Ed Brown (Nancy – deceased); grandchildren, Dr. Nakeshia Hunter (Marques), Dr. Kevin Brown, Dr. Reginald Avery, Dr. Jeffrey Avery (Dr. Amber), and Dr. Ashley Brown; great-granddaughter, Marleigh Avery; nieces, Faye Golson, Rose Morgan, and Tonda West; nephews, Ed Brown, Jr. & Eric Brown; and a host of cousins, and friends.
