REFLECTION OF LIFE

MRS. HELEN LOUISE ALEXANDER, was affectionately known as “Pookie” by everyone. Pookie is the daughter of the late William Wallace and Lucy Belle (Seward) Haskins. She was born on January 17, 1956 in Keats, North Carolina and departed this life September 3, 2024 at her residence in Palmer Springs (Boydton), VA, surrounded by the love of her family.

At an early age, Pookie was baptized and joined Bethlehem Christian Church in Manson, NC. She graduated from Park View Senior High School and embarked on a lifelong mission to serve others through her career in social work. Pookie dedicated her life to uplifting local communities, migrant workers, and anyone in need, always offering a helping hand with compassion and grace. Later, she found her calling in behavioral health at the John H. Northington Workshop, South Hill, VA, where she continued her work until health challenges made it impossible.

Pookie was known for her love of life’s simple joys. She adored the color pink, found peace working in her yard, and took great pleasure in cooking meals for her loved ones. Her favorite gospel song, "God’s Grace," reflects the heart of a woman who lived by those very words—graceful, kind, and ever-generous in spirit.

Helen was a proud mother to her two children, Sarita Evett (Vincent) Phillips of Waldorf, MD, and Canita Volette Haskins of Boydton, VA. Later in life, she married Wayne Carter Alexander and shared many cherished years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers- William Wallace Haskins, Jr, (Dilly) and Jeffrey Scott Haskins and sister- Gladys Yvonne Haskins. Additionally, she leaves behind six grandchildren- T’Keysja, Mykal, Vincent Jr, Caleb, Elijah, and Joy; two great grandchildren- Eli and Zoe. She also leaves behind her sister- Nannie Maxine of Boydton, VA; brothers- Moses Louis of South Hill, VA; Steve Ellis and Robert Elmo, both of Boydton, VA; Conway Gary of Grand Forks, ND; Christopher Patrick and Shelton Darnell (Renee), all of Wise, NC. A special bond was shared with her cousin Louise Alexander, who was raised alongside her, and her loving caregiver, sister-in-law, and dear friend, Renee (Gill) Haskins.

In addition to her immediate family, Helen will be forever cherished by a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends who were blessed to have known her kind and generous soul. Her memory will forever remain a source of strength and love to all who had the honor of knowing "Pookie.
