This is to share a memory of Dr. Emanuel Aban Oddoye. I was Aban's friend in the late 1970's (1974-1980), when I was a graduate student in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at University of California at Berkeley. During those years, I was spending 70-hours in the laboratory every week, doing experiments on vitamins (folic acid and vitamin B12), and I was not yet socially skilled. I had plenty of acquaintances, but few real friends. Aban was one of my friends. During his term in the Dept. of Nutritional Sciences at U.C. Berkeley, Aban had two excellent research publications from the year, 1979. These were: "Nitrogen balance studies in humans: long-term effect of high nitrogen intake on nitrogen accretion" and "Protein-induced hypercalciuria: a longer term study." The senior author on both of these publications was Prof. Sheldon Margen. At the time, Prof. Margen was one of the most prominent nutritional sciences in the United States. After that, Aban acquired a faculty position at Meharry University, and I was so glad for his success. I only have a few memories of Aban. Once, we had lunch together on Telegraph Avenue, near the U.C. Berkeley campus. Aban mentioned that he was increasing the amount of oatmeal in his diet to reduce blood cholesterol. In a small way, Aban has been an influence on me, because now I can recognized the accent of people who are from Ghana. I miss you, Aban, wherever you are. You are one of the reasons why my years in the Dept. of Nutritional Sciences were years that were happy years. Bye-bye, Tom Brody, Ph.D.
