Ms. Cynthia Beretta Coleman, born on July 5, 1961 to A. Ruthello McCoy and the late Berry W. Coleman, passed away on September 27, 2024.

After graduating from Westover Senior High School in Fayetteville, NC, Cynthia earned her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Winston-Salem State University in 1983. She held a K-6 NC teaching certification.

A passionate educator, Cynthia worked for Cumberland County Schools (1985–1993) and Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools (1993–1995) before retiring from Guilford County Schools (1995–2011) at age 50. She was also a member of several educational organizations including the National Education Association, NC Association of Educators, NC Retired School Personnel, and Guilford/Greensboro Retired School Personnel.

Throughout her life, Cynthia was actively engaged in her community. She was involved in the Greensboro Pulpit Forum serving on the Education and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day committees and assisting in the planning and implementation of programs to meet the needs of students and parents.

A native of Greensboro, Cynthia’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for Greensboro residents earned her several significant roles. She was appointed to the Human Relations Commission by Mayor Nancy Vaughn. Her service continued with appointments to the Greensboro Criminal Justice Advisory Commission where she served on the executive board. She particularly enjoyed providing perspectives on policing strategies within the Greensboro Police Department. As a Commissioner, Cynthia advocated for City Council District 5 until her passing.

A travel enthusiast, Cynthia achieved her bucket list item of visiting all fifty states. She also journeyed to France, England, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and the Caribbean Islands, with her family.

Cynthia is preceded in death by her father, Berry W. Coleman, and grandparents: Luther and Lizzie Coleman, Ernest and Margaret McCoy.

She is survived by her mother, A. Ruthello McCoy; her sister, Debra Kay Coleman; her uncle, Ernest McCoy; her aunt, Mary Ann Coleman; and a host of cousins and friends who will cherish her memory.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 12:00 pm at Oak Grove AME Zion Church located at 300 Lawrence Street in Greensboro, North Carolina. The family visitation will be held at 11:30 am before the service.

The burial will take place on Monday, October 7, 2024 at 12:00 pm at Guilford Memorial Park located at 6000 Gate City Boulevard in Greensboro, North Carolina.
