Ethel King, 84, passed on Saturday, October 12, 2024 in Phenix City, AL.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. EST on Monday, October 21, 2024 at Andrew Chapel AME Zion Church, 72 Battle Rd, Hurtsboro, AL with Rev. Renee Adams, pastor, officiating. Burial to follow in the church cemetery. Public viewing is 2:00-5:00 p.m. EST on Saturday, October 19, 2024.

Ethel Brundidge King, born on July 3, 1940, in Seale, Alabama. She gained her wings on October 12, 2024, in Phenix City, Alabama. She was the second of fifteen children born to the late Johnny Lee and Lucinda Brundidge. Ethel accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Andrew Chapel AME Zion Church in Hurtsboro, Alabama. Ethel graduated from Sanford School in Seale, Alabama.

On December 2, 1960, Ethel married George King, and they later moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she dedicated over 42 years of her life working for Nesby Candy. To this union, they had one son (Tarz Andrew). In 2003, she returned to Alabama to care for her mother during her later years. Upon her return, she rejoin Andrew Chapel AME Zion Church and served on the Usher Board until her health started failing.

A devoted mother, Ethel loved nothing more than caring for her son, Tarz Andrew, who sadly passed away in August 2023. She was known for her un-selflessness, often willing to give the shirt off her back to help someone in need. Her favorite saying when calling friends and family was, “What were you doing and what did you cook?”

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny Lee and Lucinda Brundidge, brothers, Charles, JB, Izille, Huzzell, Tommie, Johnny Jr. and Climmie.


Ethel is survived by her husband, George King; her beloved sister, Lucretia (Eddie) Thomas of Hurtsboro, Alabama; six brothers, Wordell (Georgia Mae) of Columbus, Georgia, Jimmie (Catherine) of Hatchechubbee, Alabama, OB (Esther) of Ft. Mitchell, Alabama, Arthur (Vernoda) of Dallas, Texas, Robert (Margie) of Hurtsboro, Alabama, and Gary of Riverdale, Georgia; great nephew, Amarie Brundidge of Phenix City, Alabama; three brothers-in-law, Joe King, James King, Eddie (Gladys) King; one sister, Rhasonya Muhammad; She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, who will remember her for her warmth and generosity. Ethel Brundidge King will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
