Theodis Stevens

THEODIS S. STEVENS, son of the late Walter Stevens and the late Carrie Williams Stevens was born in St. Petersburg, Florida.

"Sonny” or Theo”, as he was affectionately called, received his formal education in the Steelton Public School System until his family relocated to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where he attended William Penn High School. In 1956 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. While in the Marines he completed his General Education Development. Theodis was later stationed at the Marine Base of Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, where he attended night school and received his high school diploma from the State of North Carolina. Theodis served two tours of duty in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967 and was a platoon Sergeant from 1969 to 1970. His military time was a combination of the Pennsylvania National Guard, United States Marines and the United States Army Reserves, from where he retired.

After his time in Marines, he was employed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Corrections, Camp Hill State Correctional Institution. Having a desire to further his education, Theodis attended Harrisburg Area Community College and received his Associate’s Degree in Corrections-Rehabilitation in 1976. In 1979, Theodis began a new career with the Federal Government at the New Cumberland Army Depot in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania from where he retired in 1980.

His Masonic affiliation is Senior Warden of Chosen Friends Lodge #43 Worthy Patron of Ester Chapter No 1, Harrisburg Chapter #26 Royal Arch Masons, Masonic Knight S. Templar in Howard Lennon Commandery, UD.

On Saturday, October 26, 2024 at the UPMC Harrisburg Hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Theodis S. Stevenson completed his Earthly journey at the age of 85 years.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Freddie, Richard and Walter Stevens and sisters, Anita and Ethel Stevens. His legacy will be cherished by his wife, Thelma Stevens; his sons, Theodis McIver and Theodore Butterfield (Nikki); his daughter, Valerie Stevens; his stepchildren, Andre Lyles, Andrea Jones (Bobby), Eugenia Bentley (Robert), Katrina Williamson (Barry); his 14 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

Theodis' life will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 7, 2024 in the Sanctuary of Wesley Union AME Zion Church, 2219 N. 5th Street, Harrisburg with viewing and visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and burial in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
