Mr. James Lewis Smith

James Lewis Smith, affectionately known as “T-Boy” by family and friends, was born on July 18, 1934, to the late Joseph Lesley Smith and Cora Finney Smith. He departed this life on Monday, December 9, 2024, surrounded by the love and support of his devoted wife and children.

James received his education in the Rockingham County public schools. At an early age, he joined Davis Progressive Baptist Church. Later, he moved his membership to Withers Chapel United Methodist Church to be with his wife. Throughout his years at Withers Chapel, he served diligently as a Church Trustee, Usher, Financial Steward, and was a member of the United Methodist Men.

After 35 years of dedicated service, James retired from Salem Steel Company. He was also a member of the Red Rock Lodge #809 where he maintained membership for over 50 years.

James was preceded in death by his brothers, Hobert, Harry, Joseph, Walter, and James “Lonnie” Smith, as well as his sisters, Mary Martin, Frances Hairston, Gloria Smith, Bessie Webster, and Daisy Hairston.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Loretta Satterfield Smith, of the home; two children, Wayne Smith of Winston-Salem, NC, and Gwendolyn Smith of Belews Creek, NC; one brother, Harold Smith of Wadesboro, NC; one sister, Charlotte Turner of Winston-Salem, NC; one sister-in-law, Portia Satterfield of Kernersville, NC; one brother-in-law, Raymond Hairston of Walnut Cove, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

His kind spirit, gentle demeanor, and unwavering commitment to family and community will forever echo in the hearts of those fortunate enough to know him.

The Homegoing Services will be on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 12:00 p.m., at Withers Chapel Church, 2793 Pine Hall Road, Belews Creek, North Carolina. Interment will follow in the family plot of the Church Cemetery.

The public viewing will be on Saturday, December 14, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Withers Chapel Church.


The Smith Family will greet family and friends from 11:30 a.m. -12:00 pm at the Church.
