Treva June Simmons

Treva June (Freeman) Simmons, 86 of Jacksboro, TX, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 20th, 2025, in Decatur, TX.

Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 25th, at the First Baptist Church of Alvord, TX.

Burial will follow at New Harp Cemetery in Forestburg, TX.

Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 24th, at the White Family Funeral Home in Bowie, TX.

Treva was born March 17, 1938, in Orange County, California to Bennett Elba and Vivian Lorene (Lee) Freeman, she was the granddaughter of Sim Elba and Nocona Maude (Foster) Freeman, and Robert Edward and Lula Pearl (Emery) Lee. As a young girl she attended schools in Forestburg and Alvord, TX, all while helping care for her brothers and sisters. At 14 years of age, she started working at a department store in Dallas.

On September 25, 1954, Treva married Harry Franklin Simmons, the couple lived in New Harp, raising their 3 children, Teresa, Cary, Benny and Simmons. In November 1962 to the family moved to Alvord, TX and attended Bethel Baptist Church, Treva became reborn in 1967.

Treva took extreme pride in her family, meeting all their needs and providing care beyond great measure. The family enjoyed camping trips, picnics, music, and rock and arrowhead hunting. She enjoyed summer fun with her nieces and nephews at her home. Treva raised gardens, canning fruits of her labor to provide for her family.

She was a great seamstress making her own patterns or redoing clothes to fit, making quilts, curtains and school clothes. Her hands embroidered many pillowcases, Christmas dolls, bears and special gifts. Treva was very creative and artistic, self-taught and painted many wonderful things.

Treva later went to work for the Decatur Sewing Factory for 2 years, Hagars in Bowie for 10 years, Gibsons for 5 years, Josten’s in Denton for 5 years, and Walmart for 10 years. She retired at 65 years old.

She lived in Alvord from 1962 to 2002, and in May 2002 Treva and her husband Harry (aka Shorty) moved to Jacksboro. The couple resided together until he went to be with the Lord in 2010. After his passing she carried on providing for herself and her family up until 2015 when she needed a pacemaker to keep carrying on. Treva remained a devoted wife, mother grandmother, she shared her life with so many family members and friends and will be truly missed by all those around her.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years Harry “Shorty” Simmons; her parents; brothers, Mack, Dennis and Elba Freeman; sister, Donna Freeman Brown; great-grandsons, Treyton Simmons and Brogan Hamilton; great-great-grandson, Grady Blaine Chavana; and son-in-law Freddie Pate.

Treva is survived by her 3 children, Teresa (Simmons) Pate of Jacksboro, Cary Simmons and wife Phyllis of Alvord, and Benny Simmons and wife Trisha of Cottondale; grandchildren, Treva Dutter, Levi Pate and wife Nicole, Kaysi Hamilton and husband Randy, Kallie Marburger and husband Ash, Adam Simmons and wife Amanda, Jennifer Bush and husband Daniel, Josh Simmons and wife KayLee, Benna Sereika and husband Jordan, and Shaylin Simmons; 22 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Morris Freeman and wife Marilyn, Dolan Freeman, and Marlon Freeman and wife Maria; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.
