Raymond Lee Smallwood

04/17/1947 - 01/24/2025

Raymond Lee Smallwood of Greensboro, GA, passed away at his home on Friday, January 24. He was 77 years of age. He was born on April 17, 1947, in Washington, GA, and was the first-born son of Felton Lewellyn and Bulah Tipton Smallwood. At Greene County High School, he was very active in the Future Farmers of America. Within a year after graduating, he received a letter from the US Draft requiring him to report for duty. Not wanting to enter the Army via the draft, he chose to join the US Air Force. He served a total of six years, with one full year being in Vietnam. While in service, he fueled and serviced planes before takeoffs. Other than those six years, he lived in Greensboro his entire life.

Raymond worked various jobs in his eclectic career: furniture store, factory work, welding, auto and diesel mechanic, erecting metal buildings, harvesting trees for lumber, and delivering car parts. What he enjoyed most was working on motors and rebuilding them for optimal speed on the drag strip. Being at the race tracks and tractor pulls brought him much pleasure.

He was predeceased by one sister, Linda Akins, and his brother Charles Smallwood. Survivors include sister Virginia (Jeni) Smallwood of Anderson, SC; nieces Elaine (Ken) West of White Plains, GA, Sandy Sanderlin and Linda Hardwick of Macon, GA, Angela (Jeffrey) Whitaker of Eatonton, GA, and nephew Jimmy (Nakita) Smallwood, also of Macon, GA. He is also survived by twelve great nieces and nephews, as well as three great-great nieces. He will be truly missed by his family and those friends he was blessed to have in his life.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at Wesley Chapel Wesleyan Church on Highway 15 in Greensboro, GA, at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will precede the funeral, beginning at 10:30 A.M. Reverend Dennis Mitchell will officiate. Burial, with full military rights, will be in the Greensboro City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wesley Chapel Wesleyan Church.
