Obituary For Lewis Calvin Harrison

MR. LEWIS CALVIN HARRISON – of Hartwell, Georgia passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2017. He was born in Collins, Georgia on December 17, 1919 the son of a Southern Baptist Preacher and was the last surviving of twelve siblings. He served his country in World War II in the Army Air Corps in the 90th Bomb Group, 319th Bomb Squadron “Jolly Rogers” in the South Pacific. Upon returning from the war, he married his sweetheart, Edna Louise French and was her loving and devoted husband of forty-five years until her death in 1990. He subsequently met and married Catherine Buffington and they were happily married for 24 years until her death in 2016. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1946 from Georgia Teachers’ College (now Georgia Southern University) and his Master’s in Education degree in 1951 from the University of Missouri. He taught industrial arts from 1946-1953 in Georgia and North Carolina. He was an instructor in the Department of Civil Engineering, Institute of Aviation at the University of Illinois from 1953-1955 and then moved to Smyrna, Georgia to accept a job with Lockheed Georgia Company in the Customer Training Department where he worked until 1971. His last employment before he retired in 1983 was with the State of Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division. He is survived by his two daughters, Priscilla (Mike) Brown of Dalton, Georgia and Marilyn (Randy) Alverson of Dawsonville, Georgia; one stepson, Gene (Tammy) Sokol of Hartwell, Georgia; five grandchildren, Ashley (Mark) Callahan of Athens, Georgia, Trevor (Alys) Brown of Dalton, Carson (Rudy) Weber of Smyrna, Georgia, and Allison Hill of Roswell, Georgia; one step grandson, Chris Sokol of Hartwell; six great grandchildren, Copper and Arrow Callahan, Sydney and Juliet Brown, Reese and Andrew Weber; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. He was an active member of first Baptist Church in Hartwell until age and illness prevented him from attending and participating. The last three months of his life, he lived in the memory care facility at Tranquility of Dalton where he was expertly and lovingly cared for.
