Mary Elizabeth Bynon Jones
Mary was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The second of three children of the late Jesse and Mary (Muscara) Bynon. After the death of her father, Mary and her siblings, Jesse and Ella, were raised by their Aunt Luella and Uncle Lee.
Mary attended the Harrisburg Public School system, graduating from the former John Harris High School in 1967. After working at a local bank, Mary went to work for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, first at the Human Relations Commission and later in General Services. It was at here, in 1997 she met her husband, William Jones Jr.
Together, they fostered Mary’s love of travel, vacationing and cruising across the United States, the Caribbean and Central America. Favorite vacation spots of Mary included Mexico, Sint Maarten and Florida. Ever loquacious, Mary met and made many friends in her travels. In addition to traveling, Mary loved deep sea fishing, shopping, trips to the casino and her beloved Hallmark Movies.
Mary deeply loved and was loved deeply by her family. Time spent with her husband, sons, siblings, grandchildren, nieces and nephews were her most valued moments. Christmas, her favorite time of year, started in the fall with her decorations and preparations for the holiday season. Her last Christmas, Mary was thrilled, as she celebrated the holidays with a house full of family and friends.
On Monday, January 27, 2025, surrounded by family and friends, Mary peacefully transitioned to eternal life at Holy Spirit Hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In addition to her parents and aunt and uncle, Mary was preceded in death by her sister, Ella Holmes; her best friend, Gwen Cox and her nephew, William Holmes.
Mary leaves to celebrate her life and legacy, her loving husband, William Jones, her two sons Eric (Tasha) Bynon and Aole Bynon, both of Lower Paxton, PA; her stepson, Khary (Veronica) Hunt of Philadelphia, PA; her brother, Jesse (Debra) Bynon, of Deland, FL; her seven grandchildren, Donte Bynon, Brandon Bynon, Miya Hunt, Sydney Bynon, Ashale Bynon, Masen Hunt and Ade Bynon; her nieces, Dyshana Heron, Alicia (James) Miller and Brandee Smith; and her close friends, Marilyn Bower and Courtney Williams; as well as a host of other nieces, nephews, friends and relatives.
Her life will be celebrated at 12 noon on Saturday, February 8, 2025 in the Chapel of the Major H. Winfield Funeral Home, Steelton with viewing and visitation from 11:00 a.m. until 12 Noon.
