Obituary For Sarah Smith

Sarah Smith, 50 of Greenwood departed this life, Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Greenwood Leflore Hospital, Greenwood, MS from complications of Lupus. Born in Black Hawk, she lived in Carroll, Holmes and Leflore counties.

A graduate of Vaiden High School, she attended Mississippi Valley State University and completed classes at Holmes Junior College as a commuter and on line student.

Sarah was employed as a certified cook for Head Start in Greenwood and Lexington for many years until her Lupus became disabling. For eleven years she endured the unforgiving pains and debilitating symptoms of the disease. Nonetheless, she lived life optimistically, and was an inspiration to those around her. Sarah was baptized at Mt. Pera Church, Black Hawk, MS where she was a faithful member and sang in the choir when she was able. She served as an usher at Providence M.B. Church, Greenwood, MS while a member there. Sarah enjoyed visiting a variety of churches to hear uplifting spiritual singing, and to attend revival services. Sarah was united in holy matrimony to the late Alex Smith to this union daughter, Alexis was born. A second marriage to the late Willie Blanch gave her a second daughter, Desiree.

Her daughters along with two grandchildren Ashton and La'Rozlynn survive her. She is also survived by her loving parents, Earl and Mary Rias, sister, Evonite (Rev. Smith), four nieces and nephews, aunts, Lula (Earl), Ruth (James), Etha, uncles, W.B. (Ruby) and John (Mary), god children Kevin and Temeka, special girl friends, Helen and Joyce, and a host of loving cousins, friends and caregivers. A visitation/wake for family and friends will be held on Friday, September 29, 2017 from 6:00-7:00pm at Porter & Sons Funeral Home, 237 Yazoo Street, Lexington, MS 39095. A viewing will take place at 10:00am followed by Funeral Services at 11:00am on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at Holly Grove M.B. Church, Holly Grove Rd, Lexington, MS 39095. Officiating, Rev. Robert Williams. Interment will follow in Holly Grove Cemetery.
