Hazel Louellen Lemons Lyon, 95, passed into the arms of her Savior on February 2, 2025. Hazel was born on January 14th, 1930 to the late Graham and Viola Lemons. In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, the love of her life, Jerry Lyon; her sisters, Colleen Oakley and Lillian Newton; and her brother, Frank Lemons.

Hazel's life is best measured by her relationships with all who knew her. Her life will impact people for a lifetime. Hazel was a “mother” to many; offering an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, and a hug to anyone who needed it. From the line at the grocery store to the waiter in a restaurant, no one was a stranger for long. Hazel was blessed with the gift of hospitality. Her Christmas Eve breakfasts were legendary! At her house, you could always find a candy dish with chocolate, her favorite Benne wafers or sugar cookies, or in her later years a Mrs. Edwards pie. A cup of coffee and a talk with Hazel would always put things in perspective. Hazel and Jerry loved traveling with family and trips to the beach held many special memories. Stews at Frank and Dolly’s, Atlantic City with Shirley, Ralph, and Lillian; Limousine rides arranged by special nephews, or bagels at Bruegger’s,there was always much love and laughter when her family gathered.

Butner became home after Hazel and Jerry married. Hazel enjoyed a long career in state government, which began at John Umstead Hospital. She retired from Murdoch Center with more than 30 years of service. Hazel enjoyed gardening and her yard was a sight to behold, especially in spring and summer.

Hazel treasured her family, and time with them was her greatest joy. Hazel is survived by her daughter, Wendy Wilkerson, and her husband, Johnny; her granddaughter, Ana McVicker, and her husband Drew; and her great-grandchildren, Beau and Shepherd McVicker. She is also survived by her brother, Clarence Lemons, his wife, Dawn, and her sister-in-law, Dolly Lemons. So many nieces and nephews considered their Aunt Hazel a second mom and she was always there for them.

The family would like to thank the staff at Eno Pointe Assisted Living and Liberty Hospice for the loving care of our mother. We are so grateful for your care, understanding, and support. Your generosity and compassion will never be forgotten.

The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church of Butner on Saturday, February 22 at 10:00am with a Celebration of Hazel’s life at 11:00am.
