Roosevelt “Teddy” Brown, 87, of Baton Rouge, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at his home.
He was born on December 1, 1937, in Baton Rouge, LA to Cal and Luvenia Brown.
Teddy graduated from Capitol High School in 1957. He then attended Southern University and A&M College, where he lettered in basketball from 1957-1961, and received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Education plus 30. He also served in the United States Army Medical Corp for two years.
Teddy married Sylvia Scott on June 6, 1964, and together they were blessed with two sons, Theodore and Roderick. He was also the proud father of his daughter, Alexis.
Teddy worked as an educator in the EBRPSS for 55 years, serving as a Teacher and Coach at McKinley Jr. High and Crestworth Jr. High; Dean of Students, Head Boys Basketball Coach, and Teacher at McKinley High School; Assistant Principal at Kenilworth Middle School; Student Transportation Supervisor with the EBRPSS Transportation Department; and Dean of Students at Sherwood Middle Academic Magnet School. He also served as the Assistant Director of the Baton Rouge Sports Academy, and a Financial Services Consultant with Primerica Financial Services.
Teddy was a passionate sports fan, talented player, and successful coach. He earned many awards throughout his career and had an impressive coaching record of 453-187 at McKinley High School, leading his teams to multiple playoff appearances and winning two state championships. He was inducted into the Southern University Sports Hall of Fame (1994) and the Louisiana High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2004).
Teddy is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Sylvia Scott Brown; sons, Theodore Roosevelt Brown of Jacksonville, FL, Roderick Thomas Brown (Crystal) of Houston, TX, and daughter, Alexis Jones (Troy) of Zachary, LA; six grandchildren, Morgan Brown Alnakib of Houston, TX, Bianca Stevens (Tre), Chelse Green (Sidney), Alea Jones, Leland Jones of Zachary, LA, and Joshua Brown of Yardley, PA; seven great grandchildren, Mia Jones, Madison Stevens, McKensie Stevens, Elijah Green, Lily Jones, Izabella Alnakib, and Izayah Alnakib; two brothers, Ollie Joe Brown (Georgia) of Baton Rouge, LA and Harry Carter (the late Brenda Carter) of Houston, TX; three sisters, Luvenia “Peggy” Hall (the late Charles Hall, Sr.), Elouise Ricard (the late Ray Ricard), and Dianne Marshall of Baton Rouge, LA; and a host of other family members and friends.
Teddy was preceded in death by his parents, Cal Brown and Luvenia Thomas Brown; sister,Idell “Baby Nell” Stampley; and brother, Alex Brown (Jackie).
Visitation will be Monday, February 24, 2025 at 11:00 am until the Celebration of Life services at 12:00 pm, at Hall Davis & Son Celebration Center, 9348 Scenic HIghway, Baton Rouge, LA 70807. Interment will follow at Louisiana National Cemetery, 303 W Mt Pleasant Zachary Rd, Zachary, LA 70791.
