Ethel Louise Johnson, a devoted educator, a faithful servant of God, and a cherished member of her community, peacefully departed this life on March 15, 2025, at St. Dominic Medical Center. Born on March 29, 1936, in Flora, Mississippi, she was the third child of the late Reverend Simon Johnson and Minnie Russell Johnson.
She was preceded in death by six siblings, whose memories she held dear throughout her life.
Ethel graduated from Lanier High School in 1958 and pursued her passion for education at Jackson State University, earning both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Elementary Education.
Her career in teaching spanned an impressive 38 years in the Jackson Public School District, where she touched the lives of countless students before retiring in 2005. Even in retirement, her dedication to education endured as she remained active as a life member of the Mississippi Association of Educators and offered her expertise through tutorial services for after-school programs.
Ethel accepted Christ at an early age and remained deeply committed to her faith. She served as an active member of Nazareth Lee Baptist Church for over 40 years before uniting with Mt. Nebo Baptist Church. A woman of unwavering devotion, she sang in the Choir, welcomed worshippers as a member of the Usher Board, and contributed to the Mission until her health prevented her from continuing these roles. Her faith and service left an indelible mark on her church family.
Ethel is survived by her loving son, Ronald Glenn "Kowboy" Johnson of Jackson, Mississippi; her beloved grandson, Tekulve Q. Johnson, also of Jackson, Mississippi; two devoted sisters, Bobbie (Robert) Smith of Jackson, Mississippi, and Deloris Johnson of Chicago, Illinois; brother in law: Robert McMorris and a special niece, Shannon L. McMorris-Anderson both of Canton, Mississippi. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who will forever treasure her memory. Ethel L. Johnson's life was defined by a profound love for her family, her community, and the field of education. Her legacy of selfless service, unwavering faith, and boundless kindness will live on in the hearts of those who were privileged to know her. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
