Sadly, our beloved, Azelean Shockley, 99 years old, departed her life on March 22, 2025, of natural causes. She was born on February 12,1926, to the late Joe Amzie Jones and Mary Mattie Townsend. She was born in Sunflower County, Mississippi. Azelean accepted Christ in her life at an early age and was active in her church, even as a child. She grew up in Itta Beana and Morehead Mississippi. Both cities are in the Mississippi Delta.

She had four sisters from her mother, and they were, Marie Davis, Amanda (Mandy) Brown, Earthalean Birden, and a brother, Willie (Bo} Coleman. All of which are deceased. From her father, she had six siblings, and they were, Josephine Holman, Maryrene Frank, Sylvia Ann, and Joe Earl. All of which are also deceased. Her living siblings are, Linda Malonson (Robert), Houston, Texas and Callie Boxley (Kelvin), Memphis, Tennessee.

Her oldest child is Annese Moore (John Moore), Chicago, Ill. Azelean Shockley’s first husband was the late Jimmie Lee Nevels. To this union they had four kids. Dorothy Jean James, deceased, (Rudolph James), Azalean (Angie) Howard, Don Earl Nevels, deceased, and Jimmie Lee Nevels (Joyce Nevels). Before her husband’s demise, the family moved to Venice, Florida. After the death of her first husband, she later married, James Shockley, deceased. There were no kids to this union.

She has 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren. Azelean leaves behind a brokenhearted, supported group of relatives, including nieces, nephews and countless friends.

Azelean Shockley was truly loved by all. She had an impact on each person she interacted with. She was inspirational, kind, loving, full of joy and most importantly, she loved the Lord. She lived her life to the fullest despite her life challenges.

Azelean, loss is deeply felt by her immense family and all of those who knew and loved her. Her memory will continue to live on and inspire strength, resilience and generosity in those whose lives she touched. Rest in Peace, we will miss you.
