William James "Pete" Hawthorne

Reverend William James Hawthorne, affectionately known as “Pete” peacefully transition from this life on April 30th, 2025, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Kosciusko Mississippi, at the age of 85, following a period of declining health.

William was born on September 23, 1939, to the late Rev. William Taft Hawthorne, Sr. and Christine Harris Hawthorne. He received his early education from Attala County Training Center and later answered the call to serve his country. In 1964, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he bravely served during the Vietnam War. His military careers spanned 20 honorable years, during which he became skilled in hand-to-hand combat and earned recognition for winning several boxing matches.

Outside his military service, William enjoyed the simple pleasures of life especially fishing and hunting. Above all, he found joy and purpose in spreading the Word of God and demonstrating His love to those in his community.

In 1986, Reverend Hawthorne answered the call to the ministry. Over the years, he preached and worshiped in various churches throughout the Attala County area until his health decline. A man of deep faith from an early age, he was a devoted member of Silas Grove #1 M.B. Church, where he served faithfully for many years.

On September 13, 1969, William was united in Holy matrimony to Ms. Ruth Evelyn Truss. Together, they raised three beloved children: Elton, Kimeo, and Gin. His role as a husband, father, and grandfather brought him immense pride and purpose.

Rev. Hawthorne was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. William Taft Hawthorne Sr. and Christine Harris Hawthorne; and siblings Murlee Hawthorne, Joe Louis Hawthorne, Cornelius Hawthorne, Shirley Ann Hawthorne Frizell, Ruthie Mae Burnside, Minnie Francis Samuels, Sarah Elizabeth Peeler, and James French Hawthorne.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving children: Elton (Lisa) Truss of Orlando, FL; Kimeo C. Truss Hawthorne of Milwaukee, WI; and Gin L. Hawthorne of Milwaukee, WI. He is also survived by three devoted sisters: Lubertha Estes and Vera P. Hawthorne of Kosciusko, MS, and Earlene (Fred) Peeler of Chicago, IL; one brother, Taft Hawthorne Jr. of Kosciusko, MS; and a host of great-great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and friends. He will be especially remembered by his dear friend, Mr. Johnny Fair of Kosciusko.

Rev. William James “Pete” Hawthorne's life was a testament of faith, service, love and perseverance. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
