Roxana Robbins Hicks or “Rock”, daughter of Marie Robbins and Walter Robbins, Sr. was born on May 4, 1935, in High Point North Carolina. The youngest of five children, she lived a long and fulfilling life, enriched by family and friends. Her cheerful personality, sense of humor, and smile lit up any room, and even at the age of ninety, she remained young at heart. Throughout her life, she was a loving daughter, devoted wife, adoring mother, doting grandmother, and loyal friend to many. Her faith, her church, and her loved ones meant everything to her, and she will always be remembered for her warmth, her wisdom, and her lively spirit.
Upon completing high school at William Penn in 1954, she attended North Carolina A&T State University where she majored in education and graduated in 1958. Roxana then became an elementary school teacher in Danville Virginia for twelve years. On December 30, 1967, she married her soulmate, Henry Hicks, for whom she was happily married for 55 years, and together they were blessed with the love of their life, their daughter, Maria Lynn Hicks.
After Maria was born, she became a substitute teacher and mentor to thousands of Guilford County school students who admired her dearly. In addition, Roxana served in the ticket office for Ben L. Smith High School, NC A&T State University, and as a Show Pro Security Guard for the Greensboro Coliseum Complex.
Roxana was also a member of Shiloh Baptist Church for over 45 years. During her years at the church she served as a devoted Sunday School Teacher, Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troop Leader, member of the JT Hairston Apartment Board and the Senior Choir.
Roxana loved to cook a few specialty items, and she made the best homemade soup and chicken dumplings this side of the Mississippi. She enjoyed family dinners, singing her favorite hymns, discussing politics, traveling with her daughter, and watching judge shows and 90-Day-Fiancé on television. But mostly, Roxana and Henry loved doting on their granddaughter, Madison Nicole, whom they adored.
In addition to her parents, two young siblings, and her husband, Roxana was preceded in death by her older brothers Nathaniel and Walter Jr. whom she idolized. Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Maria (Lowell III), her grandchildren, Madison, Lowell IV and Karman, her sisters-in-law, Reba and Alma, her nieces, Monica, Marilyn, and Roxana Marie, as well as a host of extended family and dear friends.
