Officer Alphonzo Chester

Alphonzo “Al” Chester passed away peacefully at the age of 59 in his home on June 7, 2025 surrounded by family and close friends. He graced us with his presence on August 20, 1965. Born in Greensboro, Georgia to his loving parents, Mary Lou Chester and the late Melvin “Shine” Perkins. He accepted Christ early in his life and became a faithful member and Deacon of the Bethelbara Baptist Church.

Al graduated from Greene – Taliaferro Comprehensive High School with the Class of 1983. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and a man of great integrity. He dedicated more than 25 years of his life to serving his community as a police officer, bus driver, custodian, mentor, and friend. Throughout his years of service, he gained the nicknames of “Hawkeye” and “Chesscat”.

He was preceded in death by his father: Melvin Perkins; his grandparents: Mary Pope-Chester and Walker Chester; his aunts: Barbara Ann Chester Brown & Viola Chester; and special aunts Thelma Pope & Helen Colclough.

He leaves to cherish his memories a loving family that will carry his spirit forward, his mother: Mary Lou Chester; his three loving daughters: Tambrial, Charcoria and Cortnee Chester; grandchildren: Jeremiah Simmons, Samiya Chester, Mikensie Treadwell and Carlie Mathis; and a host of cousins, family, and friends.

Al’s legacy will live on in lives he touched and the community he worked hard to protect.


Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 14, 2025 from the Greene County High School Gym, Greensboro, GA at 01:30pm with Rev. Willie Blockum, Eulogist.
