Ms. Effrige Legree was born on April 28, 1924, to Mr. and Mrs. Legree in Bamberg, South Carolina. She received her early education in South Carolina before moving to New York City. After moving to New York City she gave birth to her beloved daughter, Harriet Joe, who has since preceded her in death. They are now reunited in heaven. She dedicated over 50 years of her life to her work as a domestic worker—a career she embraced with pride and passion. Her legacy of hard work, love, and devotion to her family and community will be remembered.

On June 23, 2025, Ms. Effrige Legree peacefully departed this life at Amsterdam Nursing Home at the remarkable age of 101. She lived a long and fulfilling life, surrounded by love and laughter. Known for her quick wit and vibrant sense of humor, she made many friends over the years and brought joy to those around her. Her legacy of strength, warmth, and laughter will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving cousin and her devoted daughter, Rita Hunter, who lovingly cared for her since 2017. She was also supported by her aide team—Joanne, Adjo, Carol, Tremira, and Shantee—along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends. Effrige will be deeply loved and missed by all who knew her. Her family holds her close in their hearts, forever cherishing her memory.
