Sister Dorothy M. Brooken

Dorothy Miller Brooken was born September 11, 1933 in Lake Park Georgia to the late June and Lessie Mae Zanders-Miller. She grew up in the AME Church. She was a member of Zion Chapel IAME and later Francis Lake AME where she remained a faithful member. She was a member of the Women’s Missionary Society, kitchen staff and anywhere else work needed to be done.

Dorothy (better known as Dot) was educated in the Lowndes County School System. She was very active. You could always find her doing a number of things from growing flowers, sewing, working in her garden, making ceramic items, traveling and the list goes on. Late in life, she decided to pursue her passion of working in the medical field. She entered Valdosta Technical School (Wiregrass Technical College) and received her Certified Nursing Assistant Certification. She began her career in the Nursery at SGMC in 1979 and retired in 1998.

Dorothy was married to the late Wilbert Lee Brooken, and to this union 4 children were born.

She is preceded in death by her siblings and 2 sons; Calvin Zanders, Willie C. Zanders, June Miller, Ollie Mitchell, Ida Mitchell, Catherine Morris and Mattie Mae Miller, sons: Herschel L. Brooken and Alfred Brooken.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her loving memory, her loving and caring children, Wilbert L. Brooken and Sandra B. Griffin; grandchildren Danitha Blanchard (Keith), Herschel Brooken (Rhonda), Antwan Whitlock (Latoria), Jonathon Brooken, Marcus Brooken (Candice), Corey Brooken, Evan Griffin (Portia) and Allison Simon; great grandchildren, Jazzmon Brooken, Herschel Brooken III, Cheyenne Whitlock, Shania Whitlock, Stefon Simon Jr., Cavontae Brooken, Bugotti Brooken, Cairen Brooken, Cruz Griffin, Bailey Brooken, Logan Brooken and Cannon Griffin; great –great granddaughter Hailee Brooken and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, special friends and church members.

Home going service for Sister Dorothy M. Brooken will be held on Sunday, July 6, 2025 at 2:00 P. M. at St. John A.M.E. Church 800 W. Magnolia Street, Valdosta. Rev. Kelly Faulk is the pastor and Rev. Sharron Jackson will officiate. The burial will follow in the Francis Lake A.M.E. Church Cemetery. M. til 7:00 P. M. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the American Cancer Society.
