With deep sorrow but unwavering hope in Christ, Carolyn Alverson Posey Rice went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at the age of 82.
Carolyn was born on January 11, 1943, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, to the late Nathaniel Posey and Dorothy Thompson Posey. She was a woman of great strength, grace, and enduring faith, Carolyn lived her life as a testimony to the goodness of God. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, where she served faithfully and worshipped wholeheartedly before her illness.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Booker T. Rice Sr., with whom she shared a life of love, family, and devotion.
Her siblings that preceded her in death are Barbara Jean Murphy, Samuel Lee Posey Sr, Charles Posey, Elaine Gray, and Linda Scurry.
Carolyn was a proud and loving mother to Carla (Stanley) Stewart North Charleston SC, Tammy Alverson Spartanburg SC, and Tiffany (Ereck) Palmer Columbia SC. She also embraced her stepsons Booker T. Rice Jr (Jeanelro) Union SC, Jerome Rice of Spartanburg SC, and Lonnie Rice of Union SC with kindness and generosity of heart.
Her greatest joys were her grandchildren: Bryson Briggs, Ryan Browning, Cory Briggs, all of Spartanburg, Landon (Monica) Alverson Summerville SC, Stanley (Chelsea) Stewart Jr. Columbia SC, Christopher Browning North Charleston SC, Parris Palmer Fayetteville NC, Tristen McCollum Spartanburg SC, and London Foster of Laurinburg NC as well as her cherished great-grandchildren: Catherine Mimi Urban, Corey Briggs Jr. Nuremberg Germany, Kamilla Alverson Summerville SC, Britain Miller, Ryder Browning of Spartanburg SC, Lennox Alverson of Summerville SC, and Alivia McDuffie Laurinberg NC
She is also lovingly remembered by her siblings: Joann (LC) Rogers of Spartanburg SC, Stinson (Queen) Posey Charlotte NC, Terry Posey Brooklyn NY, and Steve Posey of the home. Carolyn was deeply connected to her extended family, including her sisters- and brothers-in-law: Shirley Mae (Nathaniel) Nash, Bernice Glenn, Betty Rice, Daisy Stewart, Jimmie Gray, Bobby (Ruby) Peake, Clyde (Mary) Rice, Joe Cephas Floyd and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives, & Friends who will all remember her as a source of strength and compassion.
Carolyn’s life was guided by her love for the Lord, and she lived with the quiet dignity and humility that comes from a deep and abiding faith. She was a prayer warrior, a caregiver, a wise counselor, and a pillar of her family. Her heart was as open as her home, and her legacy of love, generosity, and faith will live on in all who knew her.
Though we grieve, we do not mourn without hope—for we know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Carolyn Alverson Posey Rice has fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, Spartanburg, SC. Burial will be inthe Heritage Memorial Gardens, Roebuck, SC.
