Katie Mae Smith Freeman was born March 3, 1942 to the late Sibley Smith and Martha Faust Smith in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. As a child, Katie was raised by her Uncle and Aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Hogan Smith. On Friday, July 11, 2025 God called his child home.
At a young age, Katie joined New Bethlehem Baptist Church. She attended and graduated from Oglethorpe County Training School. After graduating, she worked for Central Soya's Poultry. After many cuts and sore hands, she decided I got to find another job. That's when she left the Poultry and worked and retiring from Westclox-General Time.
Katie married the love of her life, Gene Freeman. From this union one son was born, Gerald Freeman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Freeman; her son, Gerald Freeman; parents, Sibley and Martha Smith; uncle and aunt, Hogan and Mary Smith; grandparents, Oscar and Josie Faust; Tom and Katie Smith; sisters, Martha Taylor and Dean (BB) Smith and a brother, Tommy Smith.
She leaves to cherish her love and her memories: sister, Josie Rhodes; brothers, Oscar Smith and Vincent (Navita) Smith, all of Athens, GA; Mary (Harold) Mitchell, Norcross, GA; Delores Smith and Hogan Walter (Loretta) Smith, Jr. both of Athens, GA; daughter-in-law, Kendra Freeman and a host of other relatives and friends.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, July 16, 2025 at The Chapel of Jackson-McWhorter Funeral Home with interment in East Lawn Memorial Cemetery.
Public viewing, Tuesday 1-6 PM, at the funeral home.
