Barbara Lee Foster, age 87, transitioned peacefully on July 16, 2025, in Memphis, Tennessee. A lifelong Memphian, she was born on July 1, 1938, to Cleveland Jordan and Willie Mae Jordan, who both preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her siblings: John Jordan, Margaret Smith, Henry Gilmore, and Ruby Gilmore.
Barbara was a proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. She later earned degrees from both Shelby State Community College and LeMoyne-Owen College, completing her education with honors. Returning to school at the age of 52, she inspired many with her determination and belief that it’s never too late for a new beginning.
Her love for children and education shaped her career, spanning over 35 years as a dedicated educator. She served at Neighborhood House Day Care Center and Memphis City Schools, most notably at Carnes Elementary School, before retiring at the age of 72.
A devoted member of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, Barbara faithfully served on the Women’s Usher Board and took great pride in delivering heartfelt welcome addresses to visitors of the church.
She loved music, playing card games, and spending time with her family and friends. Her joyful spirit and generous heart will long be remembered.
She leaves to cherish her memory five children: Leon B. Jordan, Bernita L. Dawson, George B. Foster, Larcenée L. Israel (Noah), and Freeman B. Foster (Adrienne); and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by four children, Darlene Kimble, Pansy L. Foster, Oliver B. Foster, and Lloyd B. Foster, as well as her beloved grandson, Grejaviun Dawson.
Barbara shared many years of her life with George Jackson, the father of her youngest four children, who preceded her in death in May 2023.
Barbara’s legacy of love, strength, and faith lives on in her children, grandchildren, extended family, and all those whose lives she touched.
