Erwin Mancey White, Sr. peacefully transitioned on Thursday, July 31, 2025 in his home with his children by his side. He was born on June 4, 1949 in Greensboro, North Carolina to the late Ethel Mae and Edwin M. White, Jr.
Erwin attended Our Lady of the Miraculous Metal Catholic School before going on to attend Lincoln Junior High School. He graduated from James B. Dudley Senior High School in 1967. Upon graduation, he enrolled at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Erwin was drafted into the Air Force while he was a studentat A&T. After being honorably discharged, he returned to A&T to complete his studies where he earned a Bachelor’s in Science degree in Business Administration.
It was during his time at A&T that Erwin met Mary, the love of his life. They were married in October 1973 and to their union, two children were born, daughter Lakesia and son, Erwin Jr. affectionately known as JR.
Erwin retired from Guilford County Schools where he worked with children with special needs and behavioral issues. He started his career at Gateway Education Center and also worked at McIver Education Center. Later, he worked one-on-one with students who had been mainstreamed.
Erwin began working for Greensboro Parks and Recreation as a lifeguard, most recently at Smith Senior Center. Swimming was a passion of his, and he taught many people how to swim over the years. He even competed in a Senior Games swimming
competition where he won first place.
Erwin loved to work out whether it was at the gym or the YMCA. He enjoyed bowling, skating, and playing basketball. He loved watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and Duke Basketball. Anyone who knew him knew how much he loved both Dudley High School and NC A&T. Some might even say that he bled BLUE and GOLD. He went to almost every Dudley and A&T football and basketball game and was often found enjoying the band after the game and following them back to the band room.
He was quick-witted, sharp-tongued and had a wonderful sense of humor. Erwin was opinionated and didn’t mind telling you what he thought about a subject, whether you asked him or not. He went out of his way to help others and loved spending time with
his family. He was proud of his children and grandchildren. He was excited when he learned he would be a great grandfather and glowed when he met his great grandson for the first time.
Erwin was preceded in death by Mary, his wife of over 50 years. He leaves to cherish his memory: his daughter Lakesia Farmer (Joe) of Durham, NC; son Erwin White, Jr. (Tyvona Gardner) of Greensboro, NC; his grandchildren Eriyona White and Aviry White
