Larry Gene Russell passed away peacefully at the age of 75 on August 4, 2025. He was born on August 31, 1949, in Union Level, VA, to the late Vernon and Phyllis Russell and the eldest child of three siblings.
He graduated from East End High School in South Hill, VA in 1967 before pursuing undergraduate studies at Norfolk State College, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1971. After college, he enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg, NC and served with the 82nd Airborne Division.
During his military career, he was initiated into the Fayetteville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Being a “Nupe” and actively engaging with his fraternity brothers was one of his biggest passions. He was a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi, and received a 50 Year Member Award in 2023. Following an honorable discharge from the Army in 1976, he moved to Texas and graduated from East Texas State University, where he earned a Master of Business Administration in 1984.
While in Texas, Larry worked as a quality assurance electrical engineer at Texas Instruments and spent his weekends as a player and umpire on the amateur Pirates softball team in Plano, TX. As a member of the team, he won several games and regional championships. He was also an avid skier, taking on the black slopes of Colorado and Utah. But his greatest joy was music. He owned an extensive music collection, including vintage records, and put these to excellent use during his time as a DJ, sharing his love of music with clients, friends and family.
After a 20-year career, he retired from Texas Instruments, but couldn’t stay away from the intellectual rigor of engineering for long, so he returned to work at Raytheon Technologies, from which he retired in 2014. Following retirement, he moved to Henderson, NC to be closer to family. This was a wonderful development for him, and he relished the opportunity to attend family functions in person and, most importantly, spend more time with his beloved sisters.
He was a member of Bloom Hill Baptist Church, where he was baptized at an early age. During his membership, he became very involved in church activities and continued to do so after graduating from Norfolk State. This involvement continued after his retirement and relocation to North Carolina.
