David “Chat” Chatman Sr. was born on July 25, 1948, in Sarasota, FL, lovingly known as Johnson Camp. He attended Booker High School through the ninth grade before beginning a lifelong profession in roofing and hauling scrap metal. Chat was a man who embodied the principles of hard work and perseverance.
In his leisure, he enjoyed watching wrestling, cheering on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and relaxing watching classic westerns. Those who knew him well remember one of his favorite sayings: “Tighten up.” True to his word, he remained a soldier to the very end, passing on September 12, 2025.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Wesly Chapman and Viola “Pee Wee” Jackson; brothers, Charlie James Sr. and Bill Jackson; sister, Rosemary Christine “Sister Poe”; daughters, Lisa Chapman and Pamela Chapman; and the love of many years, his former wife, Annette.
Chat leaves to cherish his memory: Daughters; Tammy Chapman, Sherelle (Michael), and Lashon; Sons; David Chapman Jr., Darrell (Brandi) Chapman, and Nick (Melissa) Chapman; Grandchildren; Ty (Shay), Deandre, Shelton, Joseline, Kenya, Samyah, Yolanda, Jason, Jonathan, Niketa, Nikeria and Michael; along with 11 grandchildren in total, 11 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
His life was a testament to resilience, loyalty, and love for family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
