Mrs. Evelyn Hixon McGahee was born the only child of Jacob and Martha Wright Hixon in Augusta, Georgia. At an early age, Evelyn was baptized at Liberty Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. J. P. Murphy.
In 1948, she graduated from A.R. Johnson High School (just before its merger with the Haines Institute) and attended Bettis Academy in Trenton, SC. Afterwards, Evelyn graduated from Benedict College in Columbia, SC with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. Upon receiving her teaching certificate, she began her career with the McDuffie County Board of Education. Evelyn continued her career as an educator with Richmond County Board of Education where she taught at Charles T. Walker Elementary School, Ursula E. Collins Elementary School, and Roy E. Rollins Elementary School during its first years of integration.
In 1956, she married Deacon Horace McGahee. They were married for 54 years. To this union, three daughters were born. After marriage, she joined Mount Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. E. A. Moss.
In 1977, Evelyn retired from the Richmond County Board of Education after over 20 years of service.
A faithful servant of her church and community, she was a member of the Deaconess Ministry, Soul Winning Ministry, Senior Mission, China Banquet Ministry and several choirs. In addition, Evelyn received Emeritus Membership with the Richmond County Retired Educators’ Association. She also held a Lifetime Teaching Certificate prescribed by The Georgia Professional Standards Commission.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Evelyn is survived by her devoted daughters, Rev. Monica (Maurice) Cofer, Augusta, Ga, Millicent (Bernard) Bowman, North Augusta, SC, Melita (Richard) Lowe, Augusta, Ga; six grandchildren, Keidrian Cofer, Kauren (Rev. Michael) James of Augusta, Ga, Jessica (Pagie Jr.) Thomas, Alexandria, VA, James C. Kendrick, Jr., Augusta, Ga, Bryan (Sha’Vonda) Narcisse, Seneca, SC, and Mia Bowman, Indian Land, SC; five great-grandchildren, Taliyah D. Stamps, James C. Kendrick, III, Jace C. Kendrick, Jamya C. Kendrick and Lauren M. James, all of Augusta Georgia; six god-children and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and dear friends to include her Mount Calvary Baptist Church Family.
The family will receive friends Friday, November 7, 2025, from 5 pm to 7 pm at the funeral home.
A Celebration of Life will be 11:00 am, Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 1260 Wrightsboro Road. Interment will follow in Mt. Olive Memorial Gardens, 3666 Deans Bridge Road.
