Steve was educated in the public schools of Dillon County and excelled as an outstanding baseball pitcher. After graduating from Gordon High School, he attended Area Trade School (Denmark Technical College) and obtained an Associate’s Degree in electronics.
At an early age, Steve was converted and joined St. Matthew AME Church, where he remained a faithful member until being drafted into the United States Army. After service to our country and leaving the army, Steve became employed with Fisher Scientific in Manitowoc, Wisconsin until his retirement. Upon retirement, Steve and his family moved to Richmond, Virginia. When Steve’s health began to decline, he relocated to Marion, South Carolina to reside with his sister, Mary.
Steve was preceded in death by his wife: Brenda Stephens and a brother: Nathaniel “Nate” Stephens.
Steve leaves to cherish fond memories ~ two sons: Andre Stephens of Hampton, VA and Frederick Ayers of Washington, DC; two brothers: James (Runell) Stephens of Statesboro, GA and John (Sophronia) Stephens of Decatur, GA; three sisters: Hazel Stephens of Dillon, SC, Mary (James) Bethea of Marion, SC and Martha (Jerry) Lee of Charlotte, NC; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two sisters-n-law: Patricia Robertson of Parlin, NJ and Charlene Brackins of Jersey City, NJ; a very special friend: Carol Denise Thomas of Richmond, VA and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.
