“The name Estelle comes from the Old French word estel, meaning “star.” It carries associations with light, guidance, and brightness—often symbolizing someone who shines in the lives of others…
Estelle Louise Blackman was born on May 31, 1945, to the late Annie Mae Kitt and Carey Johnson in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She entered eternal rest at Harlem Hospital on December 6, 2025. A devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Estelle’s presence brought warmth and joy to all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed.
In 1965, Estelle moved from South Carolina to 2268 7th Avenue in Harlem. It was there, at a New Year’s party, that she met the love of her life, William, through her sister Mamie and William’s close friend Harvey. After two years of courtship, Estelle and William were united in marriage in October 1967. The couple later made their home in the Dyckman Houses, where Estelle pursued her education at City College and proudly earned an Associate of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education.
Estelle dedicated the majority of her career to teaching within the New York City Board of Education, where she served with passion and commitment. She retired in 2005 after having touched the lives of countless children and families.
Estelle was welcomed into eternal peace, preceded in passing by her beloved husband, William Othello Blackman; their three sons, Maurice, Anthony, and Marlon; and seven grandchildren—Maurice Jr. (Pierre), Kenneth, Maizyr, Amazín, Ryziam, Nizama, and Amorjáe. Known throughout her community for her wisdom, elegance, and impeccable sense of style, Estelle was a trusted advisor, a steadfast friend, and a cherished pillar of her family. As the youngest of ten children, she made her mark on this earth—and undoubtedly on the hearts of all who crossed her path.
Family-oriented and deeply rooted in love, Estelle valued both giving and receiving guidance, always offering her time, compassion, and insight. Those who had the blessing of knowing her carry cherished memories of her vibrancy, joy, and colorful spirit. She was a source of comfort, strength, and encouragement, always inspiring others to grow and become their best selves.
Estelle ascended on the night of a “White Moon,” symbolizing a soul welcomed with purity and grace. We trust that the ancestors have embraced her as she transitions into light, continuing to send protection and blessings upon her family. Though we will forever miss her, we carry her love within us, grateful for the moments we shared. Amen.
