On December 13, 2025, Rev. Gail (Lampley) Favors departed this life for her heavenly reward with her family at her bedside, leaving behind 80 years of cherished memories, loving relationships, and a towering legacy of service to others. She was born on October 24, 1945 in Lillington, NC as the fourth and youngest child of Clara and Lewis Lampley. Her mother passed when Rev. Favors was seven years old and she moved to Greensboro to be raised by her older sister Estelle. In Greensboro, she was educated at the Catholic School on Gorrell Street (Our
Lady of the Miraculous Medal), and in the Guilford County School System, graduating from Dudley High School in 1964.
She attended North Carolina A&T State University as a part-time student for four years and majored in Business Administration and Economics. She was a student at A&T during the height of the civil rights movement when she met and fell in love with Paris Favors of Athens, GA who was enrolled at A&T as a history major and member of the football team. They married and raised their sons Sekou and Jelani in Winston-Salem. There she continued her studies at
Winston-Salem State University. Upon graduation she attended and obtained a master's degree in Adult and Continuing Education from Appalachian State University.
Throughout her life, Rev. Favors held various jobs related to her professional field that included
past appointments at The Winston Salem Urban League, Stroh Brewery, The United Way, and
Winston-Salem State University. She retired as an archivist in the Ferdinand Bluford Library at North Carolina A&T State University. She particularly loved her employment in higher education where she had the opportunity to nurture and shape the lives and careers of numerous students who still fondly recall her care for them as her former students.
Her greatest calling and fulfillment was in her work for Christ. Rev. Favors formerly served as a pulpit associate at Lexington Christian Fellowship Church and Cleveland Avenue Christian Church in Winston Salem, before joining Mt. Pleasant Christian Church in Greensboro where she labored in the vineyard for 27 years as a senior associate pastor. Her ministry at Mt. Pleasant also included serving as a Sunday School and Bible Study teacher, Chrisitan Women’s
Fellowship member, and a member of the Angel Food Ministry. But perhaps her most cherished ministry was in visiting the sick and shut in and praying and sitting with loved ones as they transitioned. Numerous church members and friends recalled the peace that she helped them find upon losing a loved one.
She was preceded in death by her parents (Clara and Lewis), siblings (Estelle, Wellington, and John), husband Paris Favors, and beloved niece Jennifer (Patterson) Moore. She leaves to cherish her memories her children, Sekou Favors of Greensboro, Jelani M. Favors (Knachelle) of Atlanta, six grandchildren; Tasneem, Umar, Yusuf, Zayd, Lena, and Paris, beloved nephew Thurman “Skip” Patterson, and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, cherished friends and loved ones.
