Albert Eugene Wilkerson was born on October 6, 1950, in Gifford, Florida, to the late Alfonzo and Annie Mae Wilkerson.
He grew up rooted in family and community, attending Gifford High School before becoming part of the integration at Vero Beach High School, where he graduated in 1970. During his school years, Albert enjoyed playing basketball, a reflection of his teamwork and dedication.
In 1974, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the U.S. Army, spending part of his service stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. He was honorable discharged in 1980. Throughout his life, Albert’s faith was central to who he was. He loved God deeply. He was a member of Church of God in Christ #1.
Albert had a natural way of putting others before himself. He was always there to lend a hand, whether that meant fixing something, building what someone needed, or simply showing up when help was needed. He worked with care and heart, not for recognition, but because he genuinely cared about people. His love for others showed through his quiet generosity and selflessness, leaving those around him feeling supported and valued.
Our Reflection: In his quiet strength and unwavering kindness, Albert showed us all what a life fully lived truly means. He didn't measure success in his accolades or possessions, but in the acts of a caring hand, a listening ear, and a heart open to the suffering of others. His life was a testament to the profound truth that our greatest purpose lies not in serving ourselves, but in how we show up for one another. He believed that a fulfilled life was one of service, compassion, and constant attentiveness to the needs of those around him, sometimes even to the point of sacrificing his own needs. It is this —this example of love in action—that will forever light our path and remain the most precious part of his legacy.
