Charlie Battle, Sr., 75, passed on December 24, 2025 in Columbus, GA.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. EST on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at St. Ellis Full Gospel Church with Apostle James Fears, Pastor, officiating. Burial at Canaan A.M.E. Church, Seale, AL. Public viewing is 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST on Friday, January 2, 2026 at Taylor Funeral Home.
The journey of life began for Mr. Charlie James “Bud” Battle, Sr., on January 6, 1950, in Opelika, Alabama. He was born to the late Mr. J.C. Battle and Mamie Lee (Mullins) Battle. Charlie loved the Lord, working on his land (outdoorsmanship), artillery, watching wrestling, and western series. His grandchildren affectionately knew him as “Papa.”
He accepted Christ at an early age under the leadership of Reverand James L. Parker at Canaan A.M.E. Church in Seale, Alabama. He remained a God-fearing member until his death. At 6:54 a.m., on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, Charlie passed away peacefully in Columbus, Georgia while under the care of Columbus Hospice.
Charlie graduated from Will Valley High School in 1968 and was the eldest of nine siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents, J.C. and Mamie Battle; his brother, Robert C. Battle; and his sisters, Catherine Jones and Willow Dean Battle.
Charlie decided not to join the military so he could stay and support the love of his life, Christine (Fears) Battle. They were married on December 27, 1969, and together they welcomed three children into their family.
Charlie had a diverse career, starting in the textile industry as a machinist at Swift Denim, where he spent many decades before retiring from Borbet Alabama, Inc. in 2020.
His legacy will live on through his family, including his wife, Christine Fears Battle of Salem, Alabama; daughter, LaTanya (Clifton) Battle-Wherry of Columbus, Georgia; two sons, C.J. Battle of Orlando, Florida, and Jason (Sheronica) Battle of Phenix City, Alabama; four sisters, Barbara (Homer) Hodge, Jessie (Kenneth) Horn, Sherlean Battle of Salem, Alabama, and Ruby (Larry) Foster of Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia; one brother, George (Marcine) Battle of Lawrenceville, Georgia; five sisters-in-law: Brenda Battle of Opelika, Alabama, Janice (Nathiel) Daniel of Phenix City, Alabama, Ethel (Henry) Williams of Miami, Florida, Cathy (Harold) Willis of Birmingham, Alabama, and Margaret (Karthon, II) Lewis of Opelika, Alabama; two brothers-in-law, Apostle James (Mae) Fears of Opelika, Alabama, and Ezekial (Mary) Fears of Seale, Alabama; four grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
