Mr. James William Baker, Sr.

08/04/1944 - 12/31/2025

James William Baker, Sr., age 81, of Barnesville, Georgia, peacefully transitioned from this life on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at Brightmoor Hospice in Griffin, Georgia.

James was born on August 4, 1944, in Wilcox County, Georgia, to the late Alice P. Miller. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 64 years, Marion L. Baker, as well as his brothers, George W. Harris, Randy Miller, and Reuben James Miller.

James received his education at Barnesville Industrial Booker High School. Following his schooling, he dedicated his life to the trade of brick masonry, where he became widely respected for his exceptional craftsmanship and strong work ethic. His legacy is literally built into the community, with his work standing proudly in homes and buildings throughout Barnesville and the surrounding counties.

Affectionately known by many as “Paycheck,” James was known for his dependability and commitment to providing for his family. To those who knew him best, he was lovingly called Daddy and Pawpaw. Family was the center of James’ life, and he found his greatest joy in time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, whom he loved deeply and unconditionally.

In his leisure time, James enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing alongside his son and grandsons—moments he cherished dearly. He was also an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and NASCAR racing, often finding comfort and enjoyment in watching his favorite teams and drivers.

James leaves to cherish his memories: his children, Rose Marie Miller (Stephen) and James E. Baker, Jr., both of Barnesville, Georgia; Lautriver Baker (Jerome Locke, fiancée) of Norcross, Georgia; and Darrell W. Baker. He is also survived by four sisters, Bernice Gordon of Lakeland, Florida; Rose Jordan; Dyian Attebrah of Norcross, Georgia; and Lucy Penn of Barnesville, Georgia; two sister-in-laws, Barbara Ann Harris of Barnesville, Georgia, Nellie R. White of Locust Grove, Georgia; and two brothers, Eddie Lee Miller (Barbara) of Norcross, Georgia, and Carl Penn of Barnesville, Georgia. He leaves ten grandchildren: Shakita Brown, Sherie Brown, Shavonne Cooper (Chris) of Norcross, Georgia; Jasmine Zellner (Jyles) of Locust Grove, Georgia; James E. Baker III (Janay) of McDonough, Georgia; Aliceson Baker of Jackson, Georgia; Justin Miller of Stockbridge, Georgia; Brandon Baker (Christiana) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Daniel Miller of Barnesville, Georgia; and Christian S. Baker (deceased). He also leaves twenty great-grandchildren: Aaliyah, Alicia, Deshawn, Markel Jr. (MJ), Cavonne, Jayceon (JJ), Wyntavious (Cash), Jacob, Semaj, Tristan, Gavin, Logan, Devin, Ja’Naya, Olivia, Gavin, Andrew, Cameron, Milani, Damien, and Jaiyden, along with a host of relatives, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
