Obituary For Mrs. Georgia Brown

How do you describe a virtuous, God-fearing woman? Her name is simply Sweet Georgia Brown. Georgia Mae Vernetta Fashion Brown (GMVFB) is known for her sweet, calming spirit and steadfast faith. She always had a caring, uplifting word for all she met. Anyone who knew her, knows without a doubt that Georgia loved the Lord and trusted completely in His Holy Word. She leaves a legacy of faithfulness to God, commitment to being Christlike and service to others

Georgia's foundation was developed in Moncks Corner, SC under the guidance of her parents, George and Alethia Fashion. The Fashion family were stalwart members of Mt. Carmel AME Church where character, honesty, and morality were taught and reinforced in the home. These values were imprinted and were visible throughout Georgia’s life.

Georgia attended Boylan-Haven Mather Academy in Camden, SC and graduated in 1969. There she met the love-of-her life and future husband, William Thomas (Tom) Brown Jr. After Mather, Georgia moved to Atlanta to attend Morris Brown College where she graduated in 1973.

While attending MBC, Central United Methodist Church was to become her place of worship and service. For nearly 50 years, Georgia served in many capacities, including: Children’s Ministry coordinator, member of SPRC, the Clothes Closet Ministry, the Wedding Ministry, and head usher for the 4th Sunday Ushers. Her love for flowers led her to support and maintain the prayer garden and the flowers surrounding the church marquee.

Georgia’s spirit permeated her work environment. Her varied career included: Property Manager, Real Estate Sales, The American Cancer Society, Georgia Pacific, Seaborn Lee Elementary School where she retired in 2012. Georgia served as secretary for the board of the Alpine Ranch Resort in Helen, Georgia. Georgia is an active member of the South Metro MBC Alumni Association.

Her commitment to children did not stop with her own, it showed in the extracurricular activities that she supported not only locally but worldwide. Georgia quietly supported many charities. The children of the Indian Reservation, Children of Ghana and others are just a few. She led the 4th Sunday Ushers in collecting over 1300 pairs of shoes for its “Soles for Soul” campaign.

GMVFB (her favorite sign-off) enjoyed family outings where invariably she orchestrated the picture-taking to memorialize the occasion. Playing the piano was a favorite that she shared with her then three-month old grandchild. A great speller, she was a wiz at board games. 7:30 PM meant phones off as she watched Jeopardy, a game she would often critique with Olympia.

Georgia was preceded in death by her husband,Tom; her parents and brother, Bob. She is survived by her children: Thomas Ryan Brown, Desmond Alexander (LaTrail) Brown and Rosalind (Silas) Cook. Grandchildren: Savannah Rose, Noelle Christina and Baby Sunshine Cook, Kobe Gist and Laiya Alexandra Brown. Sisters: Veronica (Isaac) Smalls and Olympia F. Jenkins. Brother: Keith (Phyllis) Fashion. Nephews: Steven Smalls Michael Tate (Tahira) Jenkins and Ahmad Ricardo Fashion. Niece: Stephanie S. Hammond. The Brown family, Jenkins family, her best friend, Cornelia T. Jordan, and many loving family members and friends.

I want to offer my condolences to the Brown family and friends. Our Almighty Heavenly Father knows the pain you feel from the loss of your love one. He did not purpose his human family to die but to live and enjoy life forever. This is still his purpose (Psalms 37:11, 29). He calls death an enemy that will be removed forever along with all pain and suffering__ 1 Corinthians 15:26; Revelation 21:4 “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore.” Notice his promise to awaken all those in the memorial tombs from asleep in death¬__ Isaiah 26:19 “Your dead will live ...Awake and shout joyfully you residents in the dust! ...the earth will let those powerless in death come to life." What a delight it will be to see them again! Allow these words to keep comforting all of you.
