In Loving Memory of Barbara Ann Boyd Valentine

Barbara Ann Boyd Valentine, at age 87 years old, peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, in Chesterfield, Virginia, embraced by the love of her family.

Born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, on January 5, 1939, she was the beloved daughter of the late Washington Lee Boyd and Nannie Bell Hendrick Boyd. From a young age, Barbara's faith was unwavering as she was baptized and became a dedicated member of St. Stephen RZUA Church in Bracey, Virginia, always supporting her church and community with warmth and compassion.

A proud graduate of East End High School in South Hill, Virginia, Barbara pursued further education in nursing, driven by her deep love for caring for others. Her kindness extended far beyond the healthcare environment, touching the lives of numerous families and individuals.

On March 11, 1957, she married Willie Lee Valentine, Sr. and their 60-year union was a beautiful testament to the enduring love and commitment of their vows: “this day forward until death do us part.” Together, they welcomed eight children, whom they brought up to respect God, be of good character, and be guided by the example of hard work.

Barbara’s greatest joy was her family. Her home was a sanctuary filled with love, where everyone felt welcome and cherished. She had a kindred spirit, especially when it came to children and helping those in need. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She found joy in cooking, playing bingo and card games, watching wrestling and soap operas, and celebrating holidays. Her daily phone calls with family and friends were a treasured part of her life, and her cheerful reply to the question, “What are you doing?” was always, “Sitting on my Happy.”

Barbara’s love and devotion in being “Grandma” was totally unimaginable. She cherished the love showered upon her by each hug, kiss, and laughter from all.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Valentine, Sr.; her son, Bruce Valentine; her grandchildren: Bruce Christopher Valentine and Kwanza Kenyatta Valentine; and her siblings: James “Bob Dick” Boyd, Maxbaer “Moon” Boyd, Robert Boyd, Carwell “Nick” Boyd, Gene Boyd, Mary Harris, Dorothy Valentine, Katherine Hawkins, and Helen Valentine.

She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love and devotion through her seven children: Willie Valentine, Jr. (Shantelle), Nannie Brooks (William), Eunice Johnson, Vaughan Valentine (Marjorie), Odessa Coleman (Randy), Valencia Valentine (Lewis), and Mary Smith (LaRicky); her honorary son Lloyd Johnson; her honorary daughter Elvira Cypress; 25 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren who will carry her love forward. Her devoted sisters, Nora McQueen, Wilhemenia Standi, and Judy King, her best friend Daisy Hayspell, and her extended family— Baskerville and Karen Bridgforth, Jon and Winnie Applebaugh, Claire Asselta, Paul Piluso and Michael Piluso—along with countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, will forever cherish her memory.
